The identity of "Italian family" may give meaning to social identities of "family" and "Italian," as well as "immigrant." Eyles and Perri also did not compare the meanings of family and ethnicity for women and men. 117).Įyles and Perri's conclusion opposes "family" and "ethnicity" as though they are separate identities, when, in fact, ethnic identity is multi-dimensional. These authors argue that into the third generation, "in many ways, 'family' has replaced ethnicity as the central focus of Ninni life" (p. They also celebrated fortunate life events together. Also family members supported one another through difficult circumstances such as bankruptcy and financial problems. Rituals such as Sunday dinner sustained the close family bonds. For example, Eyles and Perri's (1993) life history study of three generations of the Ninni family found that the family was a close-knit group. Most of the literature reviewed sees family as central to Italian immigrant identity, and my findings agree. In this paper I argue that gender identity is a facet of ethnic identity that must be distinguished in order to understand the preservation and transformation of Italian culture in Canada. However, even in this study of men, the gender dimension is ignored as conclusions are assumed to pertain to all Italians. An exception is a survey study of male Italian immigrants in Calgary (Aliaga 1994). Therefore, there has been less written about identity formation specifically among Italian immigrant women or men. This may be because the largest body of literature is concerned to explain how immigrant culture is changing, and what factors will lead to its perpetuation or diminution in future generations. Reviewing the literature, it is striking that some studies of Italian ethnic identity do not consider Italian women in their own right. All of the respondents settled in Toronto for their adult lives. The oldest member of the study came to Canada in 1928, whereas all the others immigrated between 19. In another three cases, the women's husbands participated in the interview. All of them had married and now had adult children, and in some cases, grandchildren. The respondents ranged in age from 88 to 54 years. My research is based on qualitative analysis of interviews with seven first-generation Italian immigrant women and one French-Canadian woman who married a first-generation Italian immigrant in northern Quebec. When we listen to Italian women speaking in their own words, and take into account the context of their lives, we can have a fuller understanding of who they are. My research question is the following: how do first generation Italian women immigrants define their identities in their accounts of their lives, and in statements of their values? My question is important so we can broaden our understanding of older Italian women beyond popular stereotypes. I am interested in identifying patterns in the way women present themselves as individuals, as women, as family members, as Italians, as immigrants, as workers, and in other ways. I will present data from interviews with immigrant families, which are archived in the "Lives and Legacies" database. In this paper I will examine the self-identity of first generation Italian women immigrants in Toronto. reflection on your contribution to the existing literatureĮarly Rough Draft of a Research Paper First Generation Italian Women Immigrants in Toronto.reflection on how well you have been able to answer your research question with the data you have.reflection on how your analysis emerged, perhaps including your preconceptions and how these changed.evidence from the data to support your analysis.an organized presentation of your analysis according to themes or concepts. Campbell’s addition of the rhizomatic to the critical regionalist frame succeeds in a number of unforeseen, if not unexpected, ways.Ĥ Kenneth Frampton’s influential essay “Towards a Critical Regionalism: Six Points for an Architecture of Resistance” (1983) is the most oft-cited originating point for the theory named in its title. This is further denoted in the central (dis)organizing principle of Campbell’s book in its aggregation and deployment of the Deleuzian metaphor of the rhizome (an organism characteristic of grasses which often have haphazard distribution) as complementary to the critically regionalist goals of his project. Herein, the use of “deterritorialization” as a key tenet of her discipline signals the growing importance of Deleuzian theory in new conceptions of regions such as the West. region of the West in-as the subtitle of his book suggests-a “transnational age.” Critical regionalism-originating in the theory and practice of architecture-has gained a significant critical foothold in Postwestern Studies (the area in which Campbell predominantly works) it is a field which, Krista Comer has recently remarked, “often gestures.toward a mood, a condition, a sense of place and people as disembedded or deterritorialized” (10). Her provocative suggestion that “‘American studies’ has long uncritically appropriated the name of the entire hemisphere for one particular country” (19)-in much the same way as that same country dominates many existing border discourses-is one that my arguments herein will respond to.ģ Of equal importance to my approach is Neil Campbell’s The Rhizomatic West (2008) and its development of critical regionalism as an innovative and apt lens to reorient analyses of the U.S. Likewise, in developing a comparative hemispheric framework, her analysis transgresses both national and firmly entrenched disciplinary boundaries. In focusing on marginalized voices-indigenous, Chicano/a, Asian-Sadowski-Smith effectively complicates borders as demarcations of singular identities. And secondly, in doing so, that “an alternative inter-American framework that focuses on.aces into dialogue hemispheric approaches to these geographies” (17). Firstly, that studying fiction which emerges from border regions can enable us to “move beyond dominant conceptualizations of who inhabits and can speak for the border” (11). Claudia Sadowski-Smith’s Border Fictions (2008) suggests two ideas of particular pertinence to this essay. Two recent field-shaping studies point the way in this regard, informing the development of my own arguments here and offering new theoretical maps which suggest ways in which centrifugal readings might be developed to interrogate regions like those found at national borders: regions which appear simultaneously cartographically distinct yet also culturally indistinct. Even from these external perspectives, then, the border performs a significant role in notions of nationalism, as it does from the perspective radiating from the central nation of North America.Ģ Such centripetal appropriations of distinctly transnational regions by singular national concerns need to be reconfigured if regionalism is to be extricated from its relationship with nationalism. For many Canadians the 49 th parallel performs an important psychic role in defining an identity distinct from that south of the line the border is an important line of cultural defense. The view from Mexico differs from that north of the line: the border a wall separating people from families, traditions, and ancestral lands all annexed in the mid-nineteenth century. These borders have markedly different psychological functions on either side of the cartographic marks which delineate the continental United States. boundary with Canada, we are told, is the longest undefended border in the world, often barely visible its border with Mexico, we can see, is an intensely defended and increasingly physical barrier. North American borders, despite the blending of cultures which occurs in these zones, are dominated by discursive constructions which emphasize, and emanate from, the ideological edifice of nationhood built by but one of the three nations of the continent: the United States. 1 Borders and borderlands are always already transnational: regions where nations meet and intermingle. Dens may be in rock crevices, hollow logs, or overturned stumps, but are usually in a burrow, either dug by the parents themselves or initially made by another animal and enlarged by the wolves. They emerge from the den when they are 3 weeks old. The gestation period is 62 to 63 days with an average litter size of six.Īt birth, wolf pups weigh about 16 ounces (450 grams) and are blind and deaf. Courtship can last for days or months with estrus lasting five to 15 days. Mating may occur anytime from January to April with births taking place in spring. In a pack, typically only the dominant pair mates. A pack leader may retain his position as the dominant male for years, but strife from increasing pack size or declining food supplies can result in the division of a pack or the splitting off of individuals. The other wolves may have separate dominance hierarchies, reinforced by aggressive behavior and elaborate displays of greeting and submission by subordinate members. They are typically the only wolves that mate within a pack, and they inhibit the sexual activity of others. Essentially, the mother and father are teaching the rest of the pack how to hunt, survive, avoid threats and mark territory.Ī wolf pack's dominant pair sometimes mate for life. The dominant pair usually initiates activity, guides movement and takes control at critical times, such as during a hunt. The pack is essentially a family group consisting of an adult pair, called the dominant pair, and their offspring. Wolf packs typically have five to eight wolves, but packs with as many as 36 wolves have been reported. The gray wolf is among the most social of carnivores. They may also raise a hind leg to expose the groin area. Subordinate postures include lowered tails, a lowered body position, an exposed throat, small steps towards more dominant members, a peeling back of lips, ears folded back and can include urination while crouching or urination on themselves. A dominant wolf may "ride up" on a subordinate wolf by placing its head or forelegs across that animal's shoulders. They may also growl, show bared teeth, a wrinkled forehead, and their ears may stand erect and pointed forward. Dominant wolves may show raised hackles, and may also side-swipe or slam into the subordinate members of the pack. Just as human postures and gestures express our intentions and feelings, the wolf also uses body language to communicate.ĭominant postures may include a partly erect tail, walking with the head held high and eyes directed straight towards other wolves. Scent marking via scratching, defecation and urination are all means of maintaining pack territories.īody language is a tool of communication for the wolf. Howling increases during breeding season (January through April). If answered, the wolf switches to deep, even howls to inform the pack of its location and help it to be found. Howling can also return a lost wolf to its pack.Ī "lonesome howl" is a shortened call that rises in pitch used by a wolf that is separated from its pack. Howling functions as a way to keep the pack back together, stimulate a hunt and as a long-distance form of territorial expression. Different individuals have different howls that can be heard by other wolves at distances of 6 to 7 miles (10 to 11 kilometers). Vocalizations include growls, barks and howls. Average Foot Width This is the widest point of your feet, generally the forefoot.Ī shoe that is too tight can lead to tension, blisters, and irritation at the ball of the foot.Ī shoe that is too loose will decrease stability and can encourage side-to-side movement and rolling.Gray wolves have a variety of visual, olfactory and auditory means of communicating. Average Foot Height This is the highest point of your foot (called the midfoot and often found underneath the laces) and the ground.Ĭorrectly fitting shoes provide stability at the heel and will ensure there is no slipping or irritation at the Achilles tendon. If the shoe is too shallow, it will be too tight and will irritate the top of the foot. If a shoe is too deep across the instep it can encourage excess movement. A narrow heel will be slimmer than the midfoot whilst a wider heel will be broader than the midfoot. Average Heel Width This is the width of the heel in comparison to the midfoot. Average Arch Height This is the amount of space between the highest point of the mid-sole and the ground.Ĭorrectly fitting shoes will take the pressure off your feet as your move, and stop the foot from rolling. But given that both GIMP and Krita are free, this doesn’t have to be an either/or decision. If after a few hours you don’t like it, you can try other free software, or consider biting the bullet and paying for software like Corel Painter, Adobe Photoshop or Affinity Photo.Īs free image editing software goes, GIMP is more versatile – if you want to edit photos as well as do digital drawing then it’s a better overall package (see our GIMP review for more on that). Like GIMP, it’s free, so there’s no downside to giving it a whirl. If you want a good piece of software for digital painting and illustration, Krita is definitely worth downloading and trying out, especially if you haven’t paid for any software yet. If you select a lot of colours for a complex gradient, you can also have the software automatically sort them by brightness or by hue with one click. You can open up the Gradients tool to design your own bespoke Gradient, quickly select a few colour stops, and move them along the bar in accordance with how dominant you want one colour or another to be. This is especially useful for quick design work like knocking up graphics for social media. Improved gradients: creating and using gradients has also been improved for Krita 5.0, and it's really easy to do. Bear in mind that this doesn’t work with the Advanced Colour Wheel you need to have the Palette Docker open. This is especially good if you want to try out a few colour variations in quick succession. Krita now lets you drag a colour straight from the Docker to an element or layer. This is really intuitive, and much less fiddly than trying to rotate the shape afterwards using the Transform tools.ĭrag and drop colours: this one's a useful time-saver. When you’re using a create tool to make a shape like an ellipse or a rectangle, you can hold Ctrl-Alt to rotate the shape with the stylus as you’re drawing it. The grid can be really handy as it helps you visualise how perspective will affect different objects you’re drawing, as well as creating discrete units of distance you can use to check that everything’s in the right place.Ĭreate/rotate shapes: this is a small addition but it’s neat. You can edit the vanishing points, move the guidelines around, or limit the area that they affect – which is handy if you want to keep your perspective drawing to a certain area of the canvas (e.g. It allows you to create perspective guides by placing down perspective points and overlaying a grid onto your canvas, which you can then snap brushes to in order to make sure your lines are just right. The latest edition of Krita has a few useful new tools, so let’s take a look at some of the highlights:Ģ-point perspective assistant: this is a cool new feature that makes it easier to draw using perspective. You can also group layers, and easily copy them from one project to another. “shading”, “lines”, “blue” or whatever else. You can filter your layers by name to quickly navigate to the one you want – e.g. It’s helpful without being intrusive.Īnd if you’re one for working with plenty of Layers, Krita offers a few good quality-of-life tools that make that easier. If you’re the type of person who often accidentally selects the wrong tool (hands up here), Krita has a knack for knowing it, and will pop up a little message explaining that you probably want, e.g. It’s the little things that make a difference. Unlike those programs, feeling your way around learning to use Krita is actually fun, and doesn’t feel like smashing your head against a brick wall. The main Toolbar sits on the left of the canvas, and you can add windows (Krita calls them “Dockers”) to the right-hand side when you want to pick colours, brushes, or whatever else. In terms of user-friendliness, I'd say Krita is a little less intimidating than Photoshop – though it doesn’t have Photoshop’s comprehensive guided tutorials – and it also makes more of an effort to be comprehensible than GIMP. The Krita interface is simple, effective and well laid out. |
